VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY

HIT centre is equipped with highly immersive virtual reality helmets and augmented reality glasses. The lab also has a mixed-reality space called eXperience Induction Machine (XIM2), Body haptic interfaces and vibrotactile and data gloves. Further technologies are: high definition monitors, autostereoscopic 3D displays, last generation powerful computers and videorecording digital equipment. The lab also includes a riding training simulator.

The XIM2 is an immersive environment endowed with effectors (loudspeakers and projectors) and sensors (i.e. motion sensing input devices like the Kinect; video cameras) conceived with the purpose of studying and evaluating the human-artifact interaction in condition of good ecological validity. The XIM2 can interface with physiological measurement systems.
The nVisor SX111 offers users a truly Immersive display with a total viewing real estate covering 102° horizontal by 64° vertical, with 111 degrees across the diagonal. The NVISor SX111 uses a only one microdisplay per eye and can be driven from a single PC source supporting dual DVI or analog video output.
V8 sets a new standard in high performance, professional HMDs. New active matrix LCDs with true VGA pixel resolution provide bright, vibrant color and a CRT quality image. New mechanical designs means V8 is lighter, easier to use, and more durable. V8 dons quickly and comfortably using rear and top ratchets and a spring loaded forehead rest. High performance Sennheiser earphones swivel, rotate and remove easily when not in use.

The PLM-S700 has dual LCD panels covering a 30 deg. H.FOV by 22.5 deg. V.FOV. That’s 2.25 arcmin/pixel of resolution. When connected to a personal computer, the PC Glasstron lets users see true SVGA quality display images from the PC in a personal environment. In addition, by connecting the PC Glasstron to a VCR or a DVD player, consumers will be able to enjoy the virtual experience of watching video images on a large screen display.
The KU 100 dummy head is a binaural stereo microphone. It resembles the human head and has two microphone capsules built into the ears. When listening through high-quality headphones it gives the illusion of being right at the scene of the acoustic events.
The tactile vest consists of two layers. The inner layer is in contact with the user’s and holds the actuators (29 in total) located on the back, on the chest and on the abdomen. The actuators can produce 26 different vibrational patterns providing either affective and directional information to the user. The outer layer serves to keep all the actuators tight to the users’ body.
The vibrotactile glove is made of thin, elastic fabric to fit different hand sizes. It holds 3 actuators placed on the fingertips and three flex-sensors on the thumb, index and middle finger. The flex-sensors allow the user to input commands to the coupled device by detecting the user’s hand gestures. The actuators can vibrate individually or together, thus producing different signals, each sending a different message to the user.
The Honda SMART Riding Trainer is a computerized traffic simulator that allows beginning riders the opportunity to operate a motorcycle in real-life situations without the inherent real-world risks and consequences. The Trainer’s software simulates 17 different scenarios, comprising two beginner courses (Clutch Operation and City Riding) and 15 hazard prediction courses testing the rider’s accident avoidance and prediction skills.
The 5DT Data Glove 5 Ultra is designed to satisfy the stringent requirements of modern Motion Capture and Animation Professionals. Autostereoscopic (Alioscopy) 3D displays require specific multi-view content, dissimilar to left and right stereo content displayed on standard glasses 3D television. It requires not just 2 but 8 points of view, that are generally rendered or filmed using 8 virtual or real cameras, according to very precise rules. The aim is to reproduce on-screen the same three-dimensional feeling as one would have when looking at a similar scene through a window.
