Aim

The main aim of the seminar “How to Write and Present Scientific Results" is to provide PhD students with a method to communicate and disseminate their research results. Examples of oral presentation and scientific papers in the field of Psychology, Computer Sciences and Neurosciences will be presented and discussed with the students.
Through practical exercises and group work, participants will develop the necessary abilities to draft and deliver oral presentations and write scientific articles, within their research field. A variety of tasks will be assigned during the classes, including drafting presentations, and writing and editing scientific papers based on the students’ research interests.

Syllabus

Introduction to oral presentation skills (3 hours):
- preparing your talk
- delivering your talk
- drafting your talk for different audiences and purposes (e.g. disseminating to a large public, presenting at conferences, projects presentation)
Training oral presentation skills (3 hours):
- In this unit students will be invited to present their talks. Talks will be developed in interdisciplinary groups and will have different purposes and addressees (dissemination activities addressed to a large public, presentation of research results at conferences, projects presentation).
The structure and style of scientific writing (3 hours)
- Journals guidelines
- APA norms
How to write a scientific paper
- Examples of good and poor scientific writing
Practicing scientific writing (3 hours)
Drafting a paper
- The to-do list of a scientific writer (work group assignments)
Editing
- Editing skills are a fundamental component of scientific writing. In this unit students will practice their editing skills through in class assignements
Replying to Editors (3 hours)
- Response letters (group work)
